Route 66 on the Web

Wikipedia :: Route 66

The Wikipedia Free Encyclopedia is an exquisite result of the internet. The Route 66 page is brief and somewhat disjointed, but does include some useful information. Here's your opportunity to be a hero and build it up.

Much of US 66 was decommissioned in the 1980s, as most of the traffic traveled on wider, swifter interstates. Interstate 55, Interstate 44, Interstate 40, and Interstate 15 were built over the remains of US 66, as it didn't seem so important that a highway from Chicago to L.A. have the same designation. Nevertheless, some highway historians want to put historic US 66 signs on US 66's former route.

The Mother Road: Historic Route 66
Most Route 66 pages aren't very pretty to look at (kind of ironic). This popular site is, at least, very useful.
"I hope you'll enjoy your stay. This web site is dedicated to provide free information for those who want to know more about Route 66. It takes special care to have a turn-by-turn road description. As Route 66 is not indicated on maps nowadays, any traveller needs a decent description and a detailed map before hitting the road. There's also a slideshow, with pictures from 1994." -- Swa Frantzen

National Historic Route 66 Federation
Perhaps the Mother Road's most important benefactor; a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Route 66 across the country. Join the federation, or just take advantage of this excellent resource. Includes a concise history of Route 66.
"The National Historic Route 66 Federation is the worldwide, nonprofit organization dedicated to directing the public's attention to the importance of U. S. Highway Route 66 in America's cultural heritage and acquiring the federal, state and private support necessary to preserve the historic landmarks and revitalize the economies of communities along the entire 2,400-mile stretch of road.

The Federation accomplishes these goals through public education, advocacy and membership activities. Public outreach strategies include publication of the quarterly magazine Federation News, the Adopt-A-Hundred Preservation Program, the presentation of the Steinbeck Award for Preservation and the Cyrus Avery Award for state preservation projects, a worldwide web site, the Route 66 Dining & Lodging Guide, special events and assistance to the media, authors, learning institutions and production companies. ."

National Route 66 Events Calendar
The best Route 66 event calendar I've found so far.

Route 66 Magazine
The quarterly magazine's official website.
"Route 66 Magazine is the first and only slick, four-color publication written expressly for the Route 66 Roadie. Our stories are a blend of narratives and documentaries that make The Mother Road tick with tales that chronicle the history of an era revolving around a highway which, at one time, was the primary highway from Santa Monica, California to Chicago, Illinois, or vice-versa."

The Largest Route 66 Resource on the Web
A huge site full of links to sites both useful and trivial. Too bad it's so hard on the eyes.
