Now, why is it that so many people assume that long-haired people belonging to certain alternative-thinking groups do not work or bathe?

I do believe that says more about the observers than the observed.

w00dy, JIM, and Bob, what the hell?

Patrick, I support you.

I am an aging hippie and agree Patrick.
I attended a rally in 1968 for George Wallace (I was there as part of a high school project.) Some of the protesters in the crowd began to heckle Wallace using colorful language. He said, "These hippies know all the four letter words, except bath and work!" Times haven't changed much, have they?
21 Aug 2009, 20:46
I really love this saying. It is true for obvious reasons. You can not bomb and accept there to be no war, no conflict. Unfortunately there are liars and decievers in powerful positions. Until this day there is rasicm, discrimination, and hatred, to all sorts of people. Being a hippie is a belief, a choice. Telling a hippie to cut their hair is like telling a Christian to take off their cross neclace. That is wrong. Why should we follow you, if you are a terrible example of peace.
26 Aug 2009, 09:18
Wow... I also love this picture, and find it really sad how you guys just used the stereotypical version of a hippie. I would've hoped that by now, we might have matured a little more than to downgrade someone. Mr./Ms. Anonymous, I agree with your first part, but not the last part of you comment. Your metaphor doesn't quite hit the spot. Being a hippie is a choice, yes, but you don't have to have long hair to be a hippie.
27 Aug 2009, 00:47
I agree with Paul that you don't have to have long hair to be a hippie. I never did and consider myself to have been and to a great extent, still am a hippie. Hippies believe in Love, Peace and Brotherhood. We believe in the "Golden Rule." "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." We help our neighbor without expecting anything in return. When someone is down and out, we help them to get back on their feet. This doesn't mean giving them charity, but teaching the skills they need to survive and prosper. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat the rest of his life.
We believed in "Pay it forward" way before it became popular.
We believe in listening to our fellow man with understanding and compassion. We are not arrogant or boastful. We understand that we are all equal in the eyes of the creator, regardless of your name for him. We believe we should use the earth wisely and not waste her precious resources.
I think I'm starting to ramble, so I'll shut up, but you get the idea.

I love this picture and what is being said in it. I am also a hippie, but does that mean that I do not bathe or work...Hell No! Infact, I take 2-3 showers a day and I work within a major Jewelry Corporation. Being a hippie has to do with loving one another and getting along. Loving the Earth and taking care of it so that the children of the future have a decent place to live. We teach our children not to fight, but yet there is always a war that they are hearing about? The messege that I obtained from this is simple..bomb someone else and you will get bombed back, sleep with someone and that is a virgin and you take away their innocence. And, not all hippies have long hair. I'm a lady and I actually choose to leave my hair short because it is too curly and heavy to be long, but should that matter, no.

I'll F*** for virginity, but bombing is disgusting!
02 Dec 2009, 13:18
Hm. I'm a hippie... and I both take showers, and have a job... so you're stereotypes are outdated not to mention inconsequential to the true meaning of the picture...

how is taking 2-3 showers a day loving the earth and taking care of it... are you serious? spoiled americans.
17 Mar 2010, 20:14
anybody knows who's the author of this photo?
17 Mar 2010, 20:36
That's an excellent question, mikima. I've never had any luck figuring that out either.
25 May 2010, 12:39
There are many different types of hippies you guys, some bathe and others choose not to. same with having a job. let people be entitled to their own opinion and don't judge others so quickly. anyway, this picture represents something little of us americans even bother to recognize, the hypocriticalness of our government, we go to war to solve our problems with other countries. now let me ask you this, how does dropping a bomb on someone's country going to solve anything, really? whatever, some people are just too ignorant to comprehend what i'm getting at and if you did understand it, then congrats, you're worthy of calling yourself a person. [:

Yeah, leave long haired people alone. Why can't we all listen to Mitch and associate long hair with things other than Drugs and Hippies.=P like an extreme longing for cake perhaps. There is a long haired dude, I think he wants cake. Don't you bring your long haired friend over, did you see how exited he got when he found out your birthday was fast approaching.

i am a hippie i have long locks, never been out for work for more that a few weeks, and shower minimum once a day, these people have not a clue. just shows the intelligence of some folk doesn't it. it really is pathetic how wound up some people get over a group of people that share realistic view and stand and fight for what they believe unlike the cowards that fuck up the planet and blame everyone else.

"Don't you look at me so smug
And say I'm going bad.
Who are you to judge me
And the life that I live?
I know that I'm not perfect
And that I don't claim to be.
So before you point your fingers,
Be sure your hands are clean."

This slogan has been bothering me for years.

You have to fuck to get virginity. No one would be born without fucking, hence no virgins and no virginity. (please excuse me ivf babies)

It seems to me the saying is as short sighted as the sentiment.

This is so funny. The picture is of my daughter Kristin and her friend Danelle taken about 10 years ago. It keeps popping up all over. They were both born in 1983. They went thru a hippie faze when they were in college. Yes, they have long since cut their hair and are trendy young ladies.
17 Nov 2011, 20:19
I absolutely love this picture. It may be old but the message still satnds strong.

Everyone has their own opinion, there's no point in fighting over it. Judging people on their lifestyle or how they look is not going to get you any where. So dhut up and get a life and stop making a fuss over the way people live theirs.

hello, my names kate lawrence, I'm a photographer, and I'm trying to find out about the origins of this image!! if anyone could help me out, please drop me an email, or msg me on Facebook "kate blossom Lawrence"

its one of my favourite images of all time, so the tiniest bit of information could help!

Hi Kate!

If you look at Carol Shaw's entry on May 9, 2011, she claims her daughter and a friend of her daughter's are the subjects of the photo, and that it was taken in *this* century, not back in the 60s. =)

No, bombing for peace is like cutting your flesh for good health. If it's a surgical incision made for a reason, it can leave you in better health a month/year from now than you would have been in without it. You'll have a recovery period as the cut heals, but your long-term prognosis will have improved.
12 Mar 2012, 15:39
Bombing for peace is not like fucking for virginity. If you bomb for peace eventually you will get rid of the people causing the violence. By fucking for virginity no matter how many times you fuck you will not get your virginity back. It like what Mike said its for a reason it will eventually recover and there will be peace.
12 Mar 2012, 15:47
Jake, for that logic to actually work, the last bombs would have to fall back on those who loosed them, because they are participating in -- and therefore causing -- the violence as much as those they are bombing.

Otherwise, there will always be people who believe that violence is a way to resolve conflict. So long as these people exist, there can be no peace.
